Career Options and Job Responsibilities for Healthcare Management Professionals

Healthcare management professionals are as important to the world of medicine as doctors and nurses, but this part of the field deals more with administrative tasks than with direct patient care or research. As a healthcare management professional, there are a number of career options open to you. Which job is perfect for you? That depends on your personal career goals.

Health Management Career Options

“Health management” is a vague career term – what are you actual position options? Most popularly, healthcare management professionals work in administrative positions at healthcare facilities, such as hospitals and clinics. Hihg-level administrative positions usually require medical experience as well, so a healthcare management degree is a great educational program to consider if you’re currently a doctor or nurse and want to move into a non-practicing position. Administrative positions need to be filled in areas such as finance, communications, and human resources. Not every administrative position requires you to have medical experience first.

You can also work in healthcare management in a policy-making role. Government organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only run as seamlessly as they do because there are policy makers (and enforcers) who keep business viable and workers safe. While government policy-making positions are common, many larger facilities have their own policy-makers for in-house decisions.

Daily Tasks as a Healthcare Management Professional

The duties you’ll have on a daily basis in this field could range from answering emails to giving presentations to thousands of people. Your specific tasks will depend on your job title. Most healthcare management professionals have to deal with a budget of some sort, so your tasks will include allocating money and raising more of it for future projects. In addition, you’ll be in a leadership position, so most healthcare management professionals’ days include working with a team of others in the field.

Degree Requirements for Healthcare Management Professionals

While you can get started in this field with just a bachelor’s degree, most positions require at least a master’s degree to get started and some require a doctorate or degrees in related fields, such as nursing. Your healthcare management educational program could include the option to specialize in one area; though often not required, specialization in an area like marketing or human resources, can help you get the job you want in the future.
